Our clients have been building this range of homes for
several years and we have many satisfied owners and rental
guests as a result. The homes are engineered as partially
enclosed structures, which requires much more stringent
engineering than a closed structure. What this means
is that they are engineered to meet the 130 MPH without
the windows in place, or in other words with the 130
MPH uplift on the trusses, without compromising the structure.
Building a home that is engineered as a partially enclosed
structure, costs a lot more to build, but, when you are
finished, you have a home, once you install the windows,
that will withstand winds in excess of a category 5 hurricane,
like Charley. (For a full transcript of this interview
with the Director of Residential Builds, please visit
the hurricane section. He also sits on the board of the
Charlotte Builders &
Contractors Assocation, is a member of the South West Florida
Code Compliance Committee and sits on the Charlotte County
Building Department Sub-Committee).
You can see several variations
of these models in our rental section. Adding windows where
doors were, exchanging mitred glass for doors or extending
the homes can all be done prior to permitting. The bedrooms
are always a good size and the houses are practical and
functional. More important still is the quality of construction
which resulted in only minor damage when Charley visited
us in 2004. It is the only hurricane we have experienced
in 50 years, but taught all of us the wisdom of quality
construction when buiding your dream home in beautiful south
west Florida.
